The business context
Instabus is an established UK minibus and coach hire directory and agency operated by Robert. It handles real enquiries and listing information, which makes the system different from a demonstration project.
The older WordPress-based platform no longer matched the operational needs of the business. Replacing it meant thinking about live data, existing listings, enquiry handling, search behaviour, administration and the reality that a business still has to operate while systems change.
The need
The business needed a platform that could support location-led search, listing pages, enquiry flows and administrative editing. It also needed to preserve and migrate existing operational information rather than start from an empty database.
That kind of project asks for more than page design. Data quality, routing, enquiry context, map behaviour and administration all affect whether the system is useful to the people running the business.
What was built
Robert worked on a custom replacement using a modern web frontend, a server-side API and a relational database. The system includes listing pages, enquiry flows, administrative editing, location search and mapping-related functionality.
The wider system uses Google mapping, geocoding and location services. It also involved extracting and migrating existing listing and operational data from the older platform.
Important design decisions
A live operational platform needs controlled change. Search and mapping are only useful when they support how customers look for services and how the business handles enquiries afterwards.
The administrative side matters too. If listing information is difficult to maintain, the public experience and the operating process both suffer. That is why the build connects public pages, enquiry handling and back-office editing rather than treating them as separate concerns.
Current status
Instabus remains Robert's established business. The custom platform work is presented here as selected work because it shows first-hand experience with a real operating system, not because it is an external commission.
No enquiry volumes, revenue figures, ranking claims or customer data are published here.
What this work demonstrates
- - building around a live business
- - working with existing operational data
- - combining public pages, search, maps, APIs and administration
- - understanding why technical decisions affect daily operations
